EFFECTIVE STORAGE SYSTEMS

Having a storage space for the objects that we do not use frequently, has become not just fashionable but an absolute necessity for many families and also for companies.

In order to have more space, we have emptied our houses and filled the storage units and garages with objects, furniture, books and documents. We put into these rooms what we no longer use but which we still consider useful. The problem is that this storage is not always done correctly and in many cases what we keep is useless junk or even worse, what was still valid ends up being damaged by not saving it in the correct way.

If this is your case, do not hesitate to contact me. I will help you with the organization of your storage room or garage by establishing effective storage systems that allow you easy access to everything you need when you need it.

DISEÑO DE SISTEMAS DE ALMACENAMIENTO Y ORGANIZACIÓN EN GARAJES

In the garage there are always empty areas where storage systems can be installed. The key to taking advantage of these areas, although they are not too big, lies in the design and in adequate organization. It is necessary to determine exactly the available area and plan in detail spaces of various sizes, so we can store objects of different dimensions; from the lawnmower to food or toys.

WIDE GARAGES
If your garage has a minimum of between 3.5 and 4 m wide, the most advisable would be to have one of the side walls as a storage area. First of all, make sure you measure the space correctly. To do this, calculate what the car occupies with the doors open so you can comfortably get in and out. Then you must add between 40 and 70 cm from the edge of the shelf.

Choose a modular shelving system with height adjustable shelves. This way you can create specific spaces according to the size of the objects that you are going to store. It is very practical to place peg boards on the back of the shelf, with supports for small tools and drawers or containers.
Store the objects according to their use: gardening, DIY, food or cleaning and adapt the height of the shelves according to your needs and the dimensions of your garage.

Make a list of all the materials, objects and belongings that you want to store and calculate as accurately as possible the space you will need for each of them. It will be easier for you if you draw on a piece of paper, then figure out the best option before you start assembling the modules.

STRAIGHT AND LONG GARAGES
If, on the other hand, your garage is very narrow and very long, the ideal place to create the storage area is at the back, making sure that it has an easy and comfortable access. The shelving could be in two or three rows.

Distribution in parallel.
In general, a depth of 1.90 m should suffice. With this arrangement, it is very important in the design of interior modules and corridors to leave enough space for bulky and heavy objects such as a lawn mower or the trash can to be easily removed and inserted. A minimum of 60 cm and a maximum of 80 cm wide is best for the space between the shelving units.

Distribution in 3 rows.
When the garage is very narrow and long, the storage can also be arranged in three rows of modules. For this layout you will need to have a base of 2.25 m.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR VERY SMALL GARAGES
When there is not enough space to take advantage of the side walls or the end, the solution is to use panels to hang the tools and special supports for bulky objects such as bicycles, etc.
Place cupboards, shelves or drawers in the upper free spaces so that they reach the ceiling.

SHARED GARAGES
If your parking space is in a shared space, but you still have enough space for storage, you have several solutions that will allow you to take advantage of that space with maximum security; conventional or high cabinets made of galvanized steel and with built-in lock.

DESIGN OF STORAGE AND ORGANIZATION SYSTEMS IN STORAGE

STEPS TO FOLLOW

EMPTY THE STOREROOM
Throw away, recycle or donate everything that is no longer useful. It is not an easy task but the reward is fulfilling.

CLEANING
Clean and protect the walls and roof against possible moisture. If the * moisture has already appeared, take action according to the type of damp that is present. (See the box on the right)

ESTABLISH A CRITERIA LOCATION
The garden material could be arranged as close as possible to the garage door making it easier to access heavier tools. Next, there would be the DIY area because it is very possible that you use these tools both to work in the garden and inside the garage. Then you could place the sports equipment and leisure activities and finish with the food and the washing area close to the house, protected from the outside dust.

DESIGN THE SPACE
Select the storage systems according to your needs and taking into account what you are going to keep: the bike, clothes, tools, books, etc. Remember that you will need a corridor that allows you to access all corners quickly and comfortably.

PLACE THE SHELVES UP TO THE CEILING
Place what you are going to use on an occasional basis higher up and items used frequently should be easily accessible.

VISIBILITY
Not only good accessibility is important, but everything should be visible.

TAG ALL THE BOXES
Whether they are opaque or transparent, label them all so that you can easily find what you are looking for.

USE HANGERS
Ceiling or wall brackets optimize space and leave the floor clear.

CUPBOARD BARS
If you want to store clothes, you can install a wall-to-wall wardrobe bar. You will save space and will allow you to always have your clothes neat.

STORAGE IN THE CEILING
You only need to install some rails and you will have the ceiling ready to place some boxes that will complement the available storage space.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE LIGHT
Install light points away from materials such as plastic and cardboard to avoid accidents. A good light will help you find everything more easily.

AVOID HUMIDITY

HUMIDITY BY INSULATION
Apply a thermal paint. The thermal paints contain hollow ceramic microspheres that after applying 3-4 layers form a virtual air mattress on the ceiling or wall. This air mattress prevents the heat or cold that exists on the outside from penetrating inside forming condensations.

RISING DAMP
See if there are cracks in the wall. If they exist, the first thing to do is repair them with resistant elastic putty. If there are no cracks you should think about waterproofing the walls since water may be penetrating through the pores of building materials. You can find hydrophobic compounds composed of nanoparticles that repel water penetrating the pores and waterproofing from the inside. You can also use a waterproofing paint for facades capable of bridging small cracks that appear after being applied.

MOISTURE FROM BAD VENTILATION
One of the most common causes and something we don’t deem important is the ventilation in the storage rooms. If we store clothes in them and do not have adequate ventilation, the textiles will absorb the humidity of the environment causing mould and fungal stains. To solve this problem use a forced ventilation system that introduces pre-filtered air from the outside. Through this system you will eliminate the condensation and avoid the concentration of gases from the environment.

HUMIDITY BY RISING DAMP
The garages and storage rooms are areas prone to rising damp. The humidity is produced by a poor insulation of the soil that allows water to penetrate through the pores and ascend through the walls. This type of humidity produces paint chips on the wall. There are liquid saline gels in the market that expand through the pores and form a waterproofing barrier inside the wall. You can prevent whitish spots or efflorescence from reappearing by using an ant saline barrier. Since, although capillarity is blocked, mineral salts continue in the area of the wall that suffered capillarity.

MATERIALS IN STORAGE SYSTEMS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

RESIN SHELVES AND CABINETS
These storage systems are characterized by their ease of assembly, without the need for tools. Its material is very resistant, durable and easy to maintain. Resin cabinets are recommended for storing fragile items or clothing. Having doors protect better against dust. There is a wide variety of shapes and sizes so they fit comfortably in a garage or storage room.

METAL MODULAR SHELVES
This alternative allows you to optimize the smallest spaces and they are very practical where there is a sloping ceiling. You will find them in two types of formats: with screws (to support objects of less weight) and assembly without screws (for heavier loads). Easily combined and highly adaptable. They are adjustable in height and come in a wide range of sizes: 30, 40, 50 and 60 cm depths and widths of up to 1.20 cm. You will easily find profiles that reach 3 meters high. If your garage or storage room is exposed to a humid environment, select a galvanized model that offers extra protection against corrosion.

METAL SHELVES IN KIT
In the same way as the previous system, this type of shelving has great versatility, since you can find them in several sizes. The most common are 180 cm high, 90 or 100 cm wide and 30 or 40 cm deep. They are manufactured with and without screws, the latter being the easiest to assemble. Its resistance ranges between 80 and 200 kg, depending on the manufacturer and the sheet used.

WOODEN SHELVES
They are mostly made of pine wood. They are assembled with lag screws and the union holes are already determined. There is not a great variety of measurements and its resistance ranges between 40 and 100 kg. The big advantage is that they are very economical.

ZIPBOARDS (METALLIC PROFILES) AND POSTERS (SQUARES)
This is the most versatile option. It allows you to create storage systems capable of adapting to any corner and small space or attic. You can combine different sizes and heights of shelves depending on the space available and the size of the objects you want to store. They consist of two simple elements to install: the zippers, which are metal profiles that are anchored in the wall and the gussets, which are the brackets that fit into the zippers. On the squares you can place wooden shelves, metal or even baskets. There are countless solutions that complement this system.

HOOKS
Do not make the mistake of occupying floor space when you can use hooks to attach to the wall or ceiling. You will thus obtain a perfect space to hang bicycles, skis, hoses and even chairs that you do not use regularly at home.

BOXES AND ACCESSORIES
Small or more delicate objects need more protection so it is advisable to keep them in boxes. There is a huge range of boxes: cardboard, wood, plastic and even metal. Some will be more resilient to humidity and the passage of time than others. Choose the material according to what you are going to store in them. Cardboard boxes are very useful for objects that weigh little. The wood for everything that requires ventilation and plastic boxes are the most appropriate to support a greater weight. The transparent and hermetically closed containers allow you to see what is inside without opening and also protect the content against moisture and dust.
